Becoming a member
Membership of Mayo library service is free to all who live, work or study in the county. You can join at any branch of the library (see here for a list of branches) by presenting proof of your name and current address. There is no minimum age for joining, but children and young people under the age of 18 years must get the permission of a parent or guardian to join the library and cannot join online. Parent/guardians are responsible for their children in the library, their children's selections and use of library materials and services, including access to the Internet.
Membership conditions
Membership will allow you to use the library services as follows:
- Adult: access to all library collections, services and to the internet subject to the Terms & conditions outlined.
- Child under 12: access to the children's library, to DVDs up to a PG rating and to children's internet services*
- Young Adult 12 -14: access to the children's and young adult library, to DVDs up to a 12 rating, and to children's internet services *
- Young adult 12 - 17: access to the adult library, to DVDs up to 15 rating, and to internet service*
*Internet access may vary according to the library you are using - please check with you local library.
Your library card is individual to you and may not be used by anyone else. Bring your card to the library every time you visit. You are asked to advise library staff, as soon as possible, of any changes in membership details or loss of library card.
Adults and persons with a young adult's ticket can access the Internet in the library, subject to the Internet access policy. You must at all times observe the library's Code of Conduct while using the library facilities and comply with the conditions of the Copyright and Related Rights Act 2000. Public libraries operate within the statutory framework in relation to all services including the Code of Behaviour for the protection and safeguarding of children in public libraries 2014. Library users must comply with all associated requirements.
Register online
You may join the library online by clicking at the end of this document after you have read and accepted the membership conditions. If you join online, you will receive a temporary library card number. You can use this number and the PIN you have chosen to access our online services (see here for details), but in order to borrow physical items, you will need to collect a physical library card from your nearest library branch.
Conditions of membership
- To borrow items you must present your library membership card.
- All items – including books, DVDs and CDs - can be borrowed for three weeks.
- You may borrow up to twelve items on your card. These can be borrowed from and returned to any branch of Mayo Library Service.
- Items may be renewed at any branch. Staff are happy to renew items over the telephone during opening hours, please have your library card number on hand. If a reservation has been placed on an item you have on loan, a renewal is not permitted.
- Items may be returned at any branch of the Library.
- Overdue notices are a courtesy reminder for your convenience.
- You can reserve items from other library branches in Mayo, and from any other library in Ireland. You can place your own reservations for most items through the public access catalogue. You will be notified by email or text when an item you have requested is available for collection.
- All costs incurred by the Library due to items lost or damaged while in your care must be reimbursed.
- If you change your name, address or other contact details please notify us immediately.
- Please report lost cards to the library immediately. You will be held responsible for any items borrowed before the loss is reported.
- Membership details are confidential and will not be disclosed to other parties.
